TCP: The Curry Project

Let me preface this review by saying that I’m more of a North Indian cuisine girl.  I like my spicy, carnivorous entrees.  However, Woodlands is the best vegetarian, South Indian restaurant that I’ve tried.  It’s located in a very nondescript tower: if you blink, you’ll miss it.  The interior is very open to accommodate a lunch buffet, with comfy booths by the windows and an airy decor.  You don’t have to worry about being trampled by passersby while eating.

We came in at a very quiet time (the beginning of the floods in Nashville), so we were quickly seated at a booth in the corner.  There’s no drink menu here, so I went with a mango lassi to drink instead of my usual Kingfisher.  It came in a cute little 50s style milkshake glass.  We decided to start with the samosa chaat for an appetizer, and my man got the Bombay Bhaji dosa. I got the Baingan Bharta (I asked for hot for the spice level) with some poori.

The waiter must not have heard my request for samosa chaat, because our entrees arrived in 10 minutes.  Now, this samosa chaat is literally crack on the plate.  It looks like seven layer bean dip with the gorgeous layers of chopped samosas, crispy noodle things, tamarind chutney, some kind of green chutney, and a bit of raita.  Heaven.  When I asked what happened to our order, we got  a box to go, on the house.  My man enjoyed his dosa and half of my curry.  My Baingan Bharta was flavorful, but it had almost no heat even at the requested “hot”.  The mango chutney that accompanied it was nice and spicy to it gave it a kick.  The poori was freshly fried and crispy, almost like a hot donut.  So yummy!

I will continue to go to Woodlands to get my samosa chaat fix, but I wish they served beer and had some more heat to their curries.  Just a chili pepper or two.  The service is efficient and helpful, the decor is pleasant, and that samosa chaat is addictive. 3.5 naans out of 5.
